Can PGSuper load rate bridge with mild reinforcement only?

Hello Rick, I'm load rating a simple span I-girder bridge with mild reinforcement only, without prestress strands. The rating factor results I got are 0.00, so I'm wondering if the PGSuper program is not applicable for bridges with mild reinforcement only for the load rating purpose? Please advise. I also attached my model for your information.

PGSuper is a precast, pretensioned concrete bridge girder design, analysis, and load rating software. Reinforced concrete structures are outside the scope of the program.

With that said, the software has been used successfully to load rate reinforced concrete structures.

The rating factors are zero because the Project Criteria is set to ignore mild-steel longitudinal reinforcement when computing moment capacity. This is common for prestressed girders because the prestressing steel is the primary tension force carrying element.

To include the mild-steel longitudinal reinforcement go in the Project Criteria on the Moment Capacity tab and check the box for "Include girder longitudinal mild reinforce in capacity calculations".

Again, non-prestressed reinforced concrete members is outside the scope of the PGSuper program. You are urge to understand the load rating requirements for reinforced concrete structures, understand the capabilities of the software, and make all appropriate considerations of any differences as you interpret the output.

Rick, thank you for the explanation. Since the prestressing steel is the primary tension force carrying element and the Project Criteria is set to ignore the longitudinal mild-steel, does that means it is not necessary to input the longitudinal mild steel for bridge load rating or design?

By the way, I tried but didn't find the box for "Include girder longitudinal mild reinforce in capacity calculations". Could you give me more information about that?

Since you are attempting to do a load rating for a reinforced concrete beam (no prestressing), the mild steel would be the primary tension force element in the section. You should probably input it.

For normal prestressed girders, the longitudinal reinforcement is used for other spec checks so inputting it is beneficial. One example is the longitudinal reinforcement for shear check of LRFD 5.8.3.5.

You may need to create your own project criteria and select it into your project before editing. All shared Project Criteria have a lock icon next to it and they can't be modified.

Do the following to find the setting:
1) Select Library > Edit Libraries in the main menu
2) In the PGSLibrary Editor window, select the Project Criteria folder in the tree control on the left hand side of the window
3) Double click on a Project Criteria library entry to open it
4) Select the Moment Capacity tab
5) In the group at the top of the tab labeled "Moment Capacity" the second check box down from the top is "Include girder longitudinal mild reinforcement in capacity calculations". Check this box.
